Week 2 – Rights vs Selflessness

Leader Guide

Summary

This week in Hot Ones, we explored one of the hottest topics in our culture, the idea of personal rights. Our world teaches us to protect our freedoms, defend our preferences, and fight for what we're entitled to, but Jesus points us toward something greater. Instead of asking, "What am I owed?" followers of Christ ask, "How can I love and serve others?" Christian maturity isn't measured by how strongly we defend our rights, but by how willingly we lay them down when it helps others see Jesus.

What you will need: A Bible or your Bible app, a notebook, pen, and highlighter. The verses highlighted below are linked so that you can easily access them during your study time.

Jump Start

Leader: Keep this fun and lighthearted. The goal is to introduce the idea that we all have preferences we naturally want to protect, before moving into a deeper conversation about rights and selflessness.

Leader: This section is designed to get discussions started, examine God’s truth, and apply it to our week. Life Group leaders should not assume everyone in their group is a Christ follower. Because they are taking part in a Life Group, they must be open to learning more and exploring. Pray for the Holy Spirit to work and let Him lead you as well.

Appetizer

What's something silly that you're surprisingly protective of: your favorite parking spot, the thermostat, the TV remote, your seat at church, or something else?

Main Course

Mild

Read Galatians 5:13-14

• We are told not to use our freedom to satisfy our sinful nature, but what are we called to do with it instead?

• Jesus says the whole law is fulfilled in one command. What is that command?

Leader: Our freedom isn’t permission to do whatever we want; Selflessness is the freedom to love others as ourselves. Paul reminds us that real freedom is expressed through serving others, not putting ourselves first. When our love for others becomes our priority, our perspective begins to look more like Jesus’.

Medium

Read 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

• Why does Paul say he has become a slave to all people?

• Why was it so important that Paul found common ground with everyone, what was his goal?

• How can asking “Will this help someone see Jesus?” Change the way we make everyday decisions?

Leader: Paul wasn't focused on winning arguments or insisting on his rights. He willingly surrendered personal freedoms whenever they might become an obstacle to someone hearing the gospel. As we mature in our faith, we shift from asking "What am I entitled to?" to "What will help others know Christ?"

Hot

Read Romans 15:1-3

• What responsibility does Paul say the strong have toward others?

• What example does he point to as the model for this kind of selflessness?

• Reflect on a recent disagreement or frustration you faced. How might this passage change the way you respond the next time?

Leader: This passage reminds us that following Jesus means putting the good of others ahead of our own comfort or preferences. Jesus has every right to put Himself first, yet He chose sacrifice for our sake. When we respond with patience, humility, and love we reflect His character to the people around us.

Dessert (Optional Deeper Dive)

Read Philippians 2:3-8

• What attitudes and actions should characterize the way we treat others?

• What does this passage tell us about the mindset Jesus chose, even though He was equal with God?

• Where is God inviting you to trade pride, entitlement, or personal preference for humility and servant-hearted love this week?

Leader: Paul doesn’t tell us just to be humble; he points us to Jesus as the perfect example. Although Jesus had every right to glory and honor, He willingly humbled Himself, took the role of a servant, and ultimately gave His life for us. We are not called to think less of ourselves; we are called to think about ourselves less and choosing to love and serve others the way Christ did.

Turning Down the Heat (Action Step)

Action Step: This week, if you find yourself becoming defensive, offended, or determined to get your way, pause before reacting. Ask God to help you choose the response that best reflects the love and humility of Jesus, even if it means laying down a preference or putting someone else’s needs before your own. Look for one intentional opportunity to serve, extend grace, or choose unity.
