Week 1 - How to Handle Fear

Movies at The Cove

Theme: Is God protecting me, or is fear preventing me?

Quick Movie Summary

The Aeronauts follows a scientist and a daring balloon pilot as they attempt to reach heights no one has ever reached before. Along the journey, they face unexpected dangers that force them to decide whether fear will guide their choices or faith will move them forward.

Which one would be the hardest for you? Why?

Roll the Tape

In the movie, there are moments when the safest choice would have been to turn back—and moments when pressing forward required incredible courage. We all experience fear, but fear should not determine our next step.

• Fear can sometimes protect us, but it can also keep us from something God may be calling us to do. How can we tell the difference?

• What are some ways fear quietly begins making our decisions without us realizing it? (Ex: Fear of rejection, failure, looking foolish, disappointment)

God’s Story

Read Matthew 14:22-33.

Jesus sends the disciples ahead by boat, and they soon find themselves caught in a storm. As Jesus comes to them walking on the water, Peter boldly steps out of the boat to meet Him. In the middle of the storm, Peter discovers what it means to trust Jesus when fear and faith collide.

• What changed between the moment Peter stepped out in faith and the moment he began to sink?

• What does Jesus' response to the disciples and to Peter reveal about His character?

• What's one practical way you can keep your focus on Jesus instead of the "wind and waves" this week?

After the Credits

Fear often shows up in everyday decisions like having a difficult conversation, trying something new, serving, forgiving someone, or simply trusting God with what we can't control.

This week, when you feel fear creeping in, pause and ask yourself:

• Is this choice being driven by fear or by faith?

• What would taking one step of faith look like today?

• How can I intentionally keep my focus on Jesus instead of my circumstances?

This week before making a difficult decision pause and pray for the courage to trust God with your next step. Trust that, just as Jesus was with Peter in the storm, He will be with you every step of the way.
