The Art of Humility

Discussion Guide

This past Sunday we were blessed to hear from our founding Pastor Mike Madding. He reminded us that humility doesn't come naturally—it's something we must intentionally cultivate.  In this culture we are constantly pushed to climb higher, be noticed, and prove ourselves. But Jesus points us in the opposite direction: the path of humility. True humility is not weakness; it’s strength under control. It’s not thinking less of ourselves but thinking of ourselves less—making space for God and others. This week, we’ll look at what God really desires from us and how we can walk in the way of Christ’s humility.

What you will need: A Bible or your Bible app, a notebook, pen, and highlighter. The verses highlighted below are linked so that you can easily access them during your study time.

Jump Start

1. Have you ever been absolutely sure you were right...only to be proven completely wrong?  (Like arguing about movie quotes, song lyrics, random facts, or directions—then Google proves you wrong in 2 seconds.) Share a funny or humbling story. Who is someone in your life that consistently models humility—not weakness, but strength under control? How does their example shape the way you see humility?

2. Read Philippians 2:5, 1 Corinthians 2:16. What does it mean to “have the mind of Christ”? How does this challenge the way we normally think of ourselves, others, and success? What would change in your week if you actively tried to think with His mindset?

3. Read Philippians 2:3. Break down the terms selfish ambition and conceit. How do these attitudes quietly creep into our lives—even in church, serving, or family? What practical habits can help us catch pride early and choose humility instead?

4. Read Philippians 2:4-6. Share some of your own interests/hobbies, then share some of your spouse’s, friend’s, or co-workers'. So, what would it look like to put one of these people's interests before your own? Where is this hardest for you right now? Have you ever caught yourself trying to “one-up” someone else’s story—and what does that reveal about pride?

5. Read Philippians 2:7-11, Matthew 23:11. Think about the most prideful person you’ve met—what effect did their attitude have on you and those around them? Now think of the humblest person you have known—what difference did their presence make?

6. Action Steps: Where do you most need to practice humility this week—at home, work, or with friends? Choose one practical way to “think of yourself less” and put someone else’s needs first. Be willing to share it with the group the next time you meet.

Deeper Dive (Optional): Read John 13:4-5, 12-17, James 4:6-10. What do you think went through the disciples’ minds as Jesus washed their feet? What does it mean that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble”? How have you personally experienced God’s grace when you chose humility?
