Names of God - Week 4

Discussion Guide

Yahweh, the true and proper name of the one and only God- Adonai, our master and king! Let us revere His Holy nature and the beauty of His names. May we stand in awe of His greatness, the power of His name, and let that transform the way we approach Him and live for Him each day.

What you will need: A Bible or your Bible app, a notebook, pen, and highlighter. The verses highlighted below are linked so that you can easily access them during your study time.

Jump Start

1. Have you ever used the name of someone you know in a position of power or authority to gain an advantage? Or perhaps you’ve encountered someone who relied on their title or status to get what they wanted?

2. Read Psalm 8:1. Have you ever noticed before as you have read scripture the LORD in all caps? Does that change the way you look at God?

Notes: God’s people would rarely use Yahweh as it was so Holy and reverent. Adonai was used most often but was also used to address others as master or a king. God’s name is Holy, and we need to realize the significance of His names.

3. Read 2 Samuel 6:5-8, 1 Chronicles 15:13. Why did Uzzah get struck down by God? Have you had or currently have a situation that did not go as you expected?

Notes: So many times, we have tried to do something good for God and it has turned out terrible. Often times this can be a fork in the road. We can become bitter, frustrated, angry, or give up. Or we can seek Him, ask Him, and trust Him when we don’t understand the situation.

4. Read 2 Samuel 6:20-22, 7:18, 7:22. Over and over, we see David approach God with humility and praise. How can we cultivate a greater sense of awe and reverence for God in our worship and daily lives? How can we be more unashamed in our worship like David was?

Notes: On the other side of our stale relationship is a wonderful, vibrant relationship, that will help us grow in intimacy with God. David’s story eventually leads to him having a part in planning the temple of God, but not before a place of brokenness and pain. So many times, God uses the broken things in our life for good.

5. Read Philippians 2:9-11, Romans 10:9. These passages emphasize Jesus as Lord. How do these verses deepen your understanding of the significance of Jesus’ name?

Notes: Jesus is LORD and His name is above all names. When life happens will must remember that His ways are not our ways. His name is so powerful that if we confess and believe we will be saved.

Action Step: Take some time this week to examine your heart. Ask God if He truly has authority over your life. Is He first in your priorities? Finally, will you take the steps needed to make Him LORD of all?
