Movies at the Cove - Week 4

Discussion Guide

This is our final week of 2025 Movies at The Cove, and we’re ending on a powerful note. Penguin Bloom tells the true story of a family grappling with sudden tragedy, and the long, often messy road of healing that follows. It’s not just about physical recovery—it's about identity, family, and what happens when the life you know is gone. It raises an important question for us all: Where is God when everything breaks?

What you will need: A Bible or your Bible app, a notebook, pen, and highlighter. The verses highlighted below are linked so that you can easily access them during your study time.

Jump Start

1. Have you ever had a broken bone, injury or surgery that forced you to slow down or depend on others? How did that waiting or healing season shape or change you—emotionally, mentally, or spiritually?

2. What would you say defines your identity right now? (Job, family role, achievement, reputation) How would it impact you if that part of your life was suddenly gone?

3. Read Psalm 34:18; 62:8; Isaiah 43:19. What are some of the lies people tend to believe when they’re hurting or feel like they’ve lost something? How does naming or verbalizing your grief help you move forward? What does it look like to pour your heart out to God and trust He can bring something new even in the rubble?

4. Read 2 Corinthians 4:8-9; 5:17. How does this scripture speak to the reality of being crushed, but not destroyed—and becoming a new creation in Christ? Can you recall a time when God brought renewal or purpose out of a season of loss or struggle?

5. Action Steps: Spend some quiet time with God this week reflecting on where you’ve been placing your identity. Ask God to show you where you’ve anchored your worth in something temporary. Write down what He reveals. Then, declare the truth of who you are in Christ—loved, chosen, redeemed, and made new.

Deeper Dive: Read Ruth 1:1-5; 4:13-17. The story of the life of Naomi and Ruth is a beautiful mirror of how God brings beauty from ashes. Naomi lost nearly everything—her husband, her sons, her home—and yet, through Ruth’s faithfulness and God’s provision, her story ended in restoration and legacy. What does this teach us about God’s ability to redeem painful seasons? How do we keep walking in faith when we can’t see the end of the story?
