Because Love is Greater

What you will need: A Bible or your Bible app, a notebook, pen, and highlighter. The verses highlighted below are linked so that you can easily access them during your study time.

Question 1
Are you a “thinker” or a “feeler”? How does this affect your spiritual life?

Question 2
Cove Core Value #1: We love God passionately. Read Matthew 22:37-38 and Deuteronomy 6:4-5. What words did Jesus add to His recitation of the Old Testament verse? What did He omit? What is important about both changes? Why would this be the basis for our first core value? What are some ways you have personally found to “get in the presence of God”?

Question 3
How do we love God with all we have and think and do? Read John 14:15, Matthew 25:34-40, James 2:14, James 1:22-25, and 1 John 5:1-3. Share some instructions and ways that you can show you love God.

Question 4
Cove Core Value #3: We take the Bible seriously. Read Hebrews 4:12. Do you take the whole Bible seriously? How do you determine what you will believe or not? How do you navigate parts of the Bible that go against your natural instincts? Have you ever experienced the Word of God, living and active, speaking into your life and situation? Share with your Life Group.

Question 5
Cove Core Value #4: We are generous. One way we love God is by thanking Him and honoring His blessings. Read 1 John 3:16-18. What did God’s love for us cause Him to do? How do we imitate Him in this? What specific instances of generosity and obedience do you find in this passage?

  1. Action Step
This week, we are reminding believers of their primary love and devotion. Love is an action!

    1. Whether you feel connected to God or very distant, would you make the commitment to get in the presence of God? Get away in a quiet time. Get back to church. Spend time in the community of believers.
    2. Are you taking the Bible seriously? In your next quiet time, get out your Bible and pray: “God, open my heart. Open my mind. God, challenge me and show me something new.”
    3. Are you aware of an area where you feel disobedient? (Doesn’t have to be huge, but obedience means agreeing with and applying the Word of God. Disobedience is sin, even if it’s a small thing.) First, do what you already know to do. Or to get started obeying, start reading a few verses of the Gospels each day in a systematic way and try to put them into practice.
    4. If your love for God hasn’t changed the way you spend your money, would you make a commitment to living an open-handed life, giving as God leads you, with your tithe, your resources, your time?
