PUNISHMENT FOR THEE, GRACE FOR ME!
Micah Smith
Today's Scripture: "The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.'" Luke 18:11-12, ESV
Theme: Stop justifying yourself and judging others harshly like the Pharisee.
LESSONS FROM THE PLAYROOM
As the father of two young daughters, I've become familiar with the tearful rushes into my room: "She won't share!" or "She's playing Switch without doing her reading!" The accusations and blame flow freely… as do the tears. In these moments, I've learned to ask three simple questions that transform these episodes from tattling into opportunities for growth and reflection.
First, I ask how they think their sister should be punished. Not because I’m looking for fun, new ways to punish my kids, but I’m curious about their perspectives on justice. The responses are usually dramatic – extended periods of timeout, no video games for a month, permanent confiscation of all toys.
Then comes the pivotal question: "Do you ever do this same thing to her?" The pause that follows is always telling. Internalization that the finger pointing could reasonably go the opposite direction at times.
Finally, I ask how they would want me to handle it if they were the one who had messed up. Suddenly, their perspective shifts from harsh judgment to confusion, then to a plea for understanding and grace.
THE PHARISEE IN ALL OF US
Think about your most recent criticism of someone else. Now ask yourself the same three questions: What punishment do you think they deserve? Have you ever done something similar? How would you want to be treated if you were in their position? But don't stop there – consider, like the Pharisee, how easily we can fall into the trap of thinking our good behavior somehow puts us in right standing with God. Whether we've committed one sin or a million, none of us can earn our way into God's favor. Our right standing with God comes solely through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, not through our own righteousness. Are you, like the Pharisee, unconsciously relying on your good deeds rather than God's grace?
Pray: Father, forgive me for the times I've been like the Pharisee, quick to judge others while justifying myself. Even more, forgive me for the times I've trusted in my own righteousness rather than in Your grace. Help me remember that my standing with You comes through Jesus alone, not through my own works. Give me wisdom to recognize my own shortcomings and the humility and grace to be patient and loving to others. In Jesus' name, Amen.
