HE IS OUR PEACE
Carey Madding
Today's Scripture: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6, ESV
Theme: Jesus came to shoulder our largest concerns; trust Him to bring about ultimate peace.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
When a feud separates history’s most famous fictional lovers, solely based on their family names, Juliet says: “What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet” (“Romeo and Juliet,” Shakespeare). She and Shakespeare are partly right: a soda or cola, a bubbler or water fountain, a sled or toboggan—all are simply different words for the same thing. But there is power in the Name of God.
THE MIGHTY NAME
If demons tremble (James 2:19) and all the world will kneel at the Name of Jesus (Philippians 2:9-11), it is special. All His Names are special and have meaning and comfort for us. When we are fearful of world events, governmental strife, politics, and rumors of war, the “government is on His shoulder” and He is Mighty God. He oversees it all. When we are fearful of our next steps, what decision to make, or sunk in grief or depression, Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor. When our todays or our tomorrows seem overwhelming, Jesus is also Eternal Father, and our forever is secure in Him.
HE IS OUR PEACE
Jesus, the Prince of Peace, is Himself peace. His presence brings peace and comfort, for His very Being is love and peace. When you are looking for peace and relief, look to Jesus, “For he himself is our peace” (Ephesians 2:14a, ESV). Trust in the very Name above every name, not only for your salvation, but for your peace!
Make It Personal: In a busy time of year, when there are so many “to do” lists and often financial pressure, are you at peace? You can have peace, no matter the situation, if you turn to Jesus. Does that absolve you of the responsibility to intentionally leave margin in your calendar and budget? No. But knowing Jesus is your Source of peace gives you the strength to say “no” to striving to please others instead of your Prince.
Pray: Eternal Father and Prince of Peace, thank You for saving me and leading me to still, calm waters. Help me to drink in Your peace and rest in You. Thank You for the security of Your arms and watch care over me. In the mighty Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
