Tuesday - WORSHIP IN THE WILDERNESS

WORSHIP IN THE WILDERNESS

Yolanda Lindsay

Today’s Scripture: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18, ESV

Theme: When we find ourselves in the desert, we can deliberately choose to align ourselves with God’s will and worship with gratitude.

DESERT SEASONS

Right now, as I write, I am sitting in a hospital room. Twenty-eight days ago, doctors were not sure I would make it out of the ICU. Machines were helping me breathe, and every moment felt uncertain. My lungs were failing, and the situation was critical. Yet here I am—still in the hospital nearly a month later—writing about gratitude.

When I am walking through something like this, gratitude doesn’t always come naturally. It is easy to focus on the fear, the unknowns, and the weight of each new day. In moments like these, giving thanks can feel almost impossible. Yet God’s Word reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to “give thanks in all circumstances,” not because every circumstance is easy or enjoyable, but because God is still present in the middle of them.

A CHOICE IN THE WILDERNESS

Gratitude in a desert season is rarely automatic. It is a choice. During these days in the hospital, I have had to learn that giving thanks doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine. It means intentionally aligning my heart with God’s truth instead of my fear. Some days that gratitude is simple: “Lord, thank You for another morning.” Other days it is gratitude for the nurses caring for me, the family and friends praying, or the strength to take one more step forward. Choosing gratitude didn’t change my situation, but it began to change my perspective.

WORSHIP IN HARD PLACES

Something powerful happens when we thank God in the middle of difficulty. Our circumstances may still be challenging, but our focus begins to shift. We begin to notice the quiet ways God is sustaining us—through people, through strength we didn’t know we had, and through moments of peace that only He can provide. Sometimes the most powerful worship is not loud praise on the mountaintop, but quiet gratitude whispered in the wilderness. Even now, from this hospital room, I am reminded that the desert is never a place where God abandons us. It is often the place where we learn to trust Him more deeply.

Make It Personal: Have you found yourself in a desert season lately—one where gratitude feels difficult? Instead of waiting for the circumstances to change, ask God to help you notice His faithfulness today. What small blessing, answered prayer, or moment of strength can you thank Him for right now? Sometimes gratitude begins with simply recognizing that God is still walking with us.

Pray: Lord, when I walk through seasons that feel dry and difficult, help me choose gratitude. Remind me that You are still present and still working, even when I cannot see the full picture. Align my heart with Your will so that my thankfulness becomes worship. Give me eyes to see Your faithfulness in every circumstance. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
