JESUS: GENTLE AND LOWLY
Bernadette Keene
Today’s Scripture: “Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.” Philippians 2:6, ESV
Theme: The Jesus Mindset requires the humility modeled by Jesus Himself. Even though He was equal with the Father, He did not give into self-importance like we do.
WHAT ABOUT ME?
As a kindergarten teacher, I hear the words, “What about me?” a lot. I use a class management system called “Lucky Duck” in which I choose a new duck each day to be my helper. All the ducks have a number on them that is associated with a student in my class. I shake up the box, close my eyes, and plunge my hand into the nest, pulling out the lucky duck of the day. Nevertheless, as I announce the name of the lucky duck, I see disappointment on the faces of my students as I hear the words, “What about me?” I gently point out that their duck is already in the pond, meaning they have had a turn already, but my words bring little comfort in that moment.
Being self-centered is a natural part of childhood, especially for children five and under because they are just learning how to think beyond themselves, yet as I reflect on the attribute of humility, I cannot help but feel conviction because at times, I have trouble with humility, too. Putting others above ourselves does not come naturally and is a spiritual attribute that grows inside of us over time.
IT’S NOT ABOUT ME
The verse of the day reminds us of the gentle and lowly nature of Jesus. He willingly let go of His status in heaven and emptied Himself, becoming a servant (Philippians 2:7-8), living a life of obedience, putting others above Himself. Jesus continually demonstrated humility during His ministry; some examples are the washing of the disciple’s feet (John 13:1-5), His entrance into Jerusalem on a donkey (Matthew 21:1-11), healing and helping others asking nothing in return (Luke 5:12-15), and the ultimate act of humility, taking our punishment on the cross (Phillipians 2:8). The humble life of Jesus humbles me, reminding me, “It’s not about me.” It’s all about Him.
Make It Personal: I challenge you this week to practice humility. When situations arise that cause you to feel offended, overlooked, or rejected: whatever it is, think about the humble nature of Jesus and the sacrifice He made on your behalf. Serve others with a humble heart, seeking nothing in return.
Pray: Lord, forgive me for my self-centeredness. My heart longs to demonstrate humility, but I often allow the cares of this world to cloud my view of Your gentle and patient nature. Holy Spirit, instill within me a servant's heart that reflects the love of Jesus. In His Name I pray. Amen.
