Thursday - WORSHIP WHAT?

WORSHIP WHAT?

Brenda Lineberger

Today’s Scripture: “And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’” Exodus 32:4, ESV

Theme: A god you have created is a god you can control.

FADED FAITH

Before we judge the Israelites for their failure to trust God and their insistence on a visible god, let’s consider their situation. They originally went to Egypt to escape a famine. At first, they were welcomed, but a new ruler eventually felt threatened by their growth. They were enslaved and oppressed for over 400 years. They entered Egypt worshiping the one true God. But over time, generations passed. They began to forget Him—or perhaps they felt He had forgotten them. Surrounded by Egyptian culture, they adopted gods they could see and touch. Their faith faded. They became familiar with tangible, visible gods. They began to worship the created instead of the Creator.

MIRACLES WERE NOT ENOUGH

When Moses and Aaron came to them with a word from the Lord and with the promise of freedom, the people were hopeful. They witnessed incredible miracles:

  • The plagues in Egypt;
  • The Red Sea parted;
  • Water from a rock;
  • Manna falling from heaven.

Yet even after all of that, it wasn’t enough. The only gods they truly trusted were the ones they could see and control. Faith, trusting an unseen God, felt foreign to them. When Moses was delayed on the mountain, they didn’t wait. They built a god that fit their comfort. Because a god you create is a god you can manage.

BUT WE KNOW BETTER

It’s easy to think, “I would never do that.” After all, we have the Bible. We know the story. We have the Holy Spirit and a church community to guide us. But idolatry is a sneaky sin. Idolatry is anything that takes God’s place in our hearts. It may not look like a golden calf. It may look like: Family, Career, Succes, Money, Comfort, Approval, or Control. Anytime something becomes our security, identity, or priority—it becomes an idol. And here’s the danger: we often choose these things because they feel manageable. We can control our schedules. We can control our images. We can control our plans. But God calls us to surrender, not control.

Make it Personal: The world is full of things competing for our attention. The enemy would love nothing more than for us to slowly place God on the back burner while we chase something new, exciting, or comfortable. When you feel tempted to give your heart to something else, ask yourself: Did Jesus die so I could have this? Can this truly comfort me, heal me, protect me, or transform me? Is this drawing me closer to God—or replacing Him? The answer will always point you back to Him.

Pray:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name.

Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Lord, search our hearts. Convict us of anything we have placed above our love, devotion, and worship of You. Your provision is more than enough. Thank You for loving us enough to give Your only Son to save us from sin. In His Name we pray, Amen.
