A CELEBRATED QUEEN
Today’s Scripture: “Then the king gave a great feast for all his officials and servants; it was Esther's feast. He also granted a remission of taxes to the provinces and gave gifts with royal generosity.” Esther 2:18, ESV
Theme: In the same way that Esther pleased God (and the king) and so was celebrated, our obedience pleases God and is cause for celebration.
MADE QUEEN YET REMAINED OBEDIENT
Esther was an admirable woman. She refused to act like others, and she carried herself with dignity. Even at a tender young age, she had the courage and self-discipline to face isolation, danger, and genocide. Her deep faith and God's favor took her further than anyone ever could have imagined. After she was crowned queen, we are told she still followed Mordecai's command not to reveal who she really was. In Esther 2:20, we learn that she remained obedient to Mordecai "as she had done under his care." This is a perfect illustration of being obedient to God-given authority.
OBEDIENCE LEADS TO JOY
Because Esther acted in obedience, even to the point of risking her life, she found favor with the king. Though he could not revoke the law he had unwisely been tricked into signing, he granted the Jews permission to fight in defense of their lives. They rejoiced when they heard the news and they feasted when they defeated their enemies. The feast of Purim is still observed in Israel today, so great was the joy and celebration!
Make It Personal: In the Old Testament, God spoke through prophets, priests, parents and other authority figures that He placed in hierarchies over nations, clans, and families. In the New Testament, as Christ-followers, God speaks to us through His Word and through His Holy Spirit. He can use other believers to help you sense His will. Once you know God's plans, it's a hard but simple thing to choose obedience. And obedience ultimately results in blessing and celebration. Though it may be hard, it is worth it!
Pray: God, help me to remain obedient to You no matter whether I am in a low or high station. I can’t imagine a whole nation’s fate resting on the effectiveness of my obedience. Yet, help me to be faithful when I am called to courageous actions. Help me to disregard my own discomfort or danger when needed. Thank You for giving us clear direction and faithfully guiding us. In Your Name I pray. Amen.
