Friday - STUCK IN THE DESERT

STUCK IN THE DESERT

Brenda Lineberger

Today’s Scripture: "Do all things without grumbling or disputing.” Philippians 2:14, ESV

Theme: Replace grumbling with gratitude as you worship God in the desert times of your life.

REPLACE GRUMBLING

I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of complaining at times. Unfortunately, what we often view as “just” occasional complaining can unintentionally become a lifestyle of constant grumbling. When someone is rarely satisfied—what I like to call unhappy with “anyone, anything, or anyplace”—it becomes difficult to enjoy their company. No matter what you do, nothing seems to make them happy. Over time, that kind of mindset shrinks their world, leaving it feeling small and empty. We see this clearly in the Israelites who were brought out of Egypt. Because of their continual complaining and grumbling against God, they were not allowed to enter the Promised Land. Instead, their world became a desert, and they wandered for forty years until that entire generation passed away.

PRISON INTO A PULPIT

Paul and Silas were arrested, beaten with rods, and thrown into prison. As if that wasn’t enough, their feet were fastened in stocks. Yet there’s no record of complaining. No anger. Instead, they were praying, singing hymns, and praising God. That kind of faith moved the heart of God. An earthquake shook the prison, doors flew open, and chains were broken. But even more powerful: lives were changed. If Paul and Silas had spent that time complaining about their situation, those salvations may have never happened. Their praise didn’t just change their circumstances—it turned their prison into a pulpit. It seems God is especially moved by our worship when life is at its hardest.

EXAMINE OUR HEARTS

Pride is often at the root of many sins—including a complaining, dissatisfied spirit. It can lead to short tempers and blaming others instead of looking inward. The truth is that no one wants to live that way. Deep down, we all desire peace, love, and joy. As Christians, we should regularly take a moment to examine our hearts. In Galatians 5:22–23, we’re reminded of the Fruit of the Spirit: Peace, love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Make It Personal: Is the Fruit of the Spirit evident in our lives? It’s time to shake off the old mindset that keeps us stuck in a small world of dissatisfaction—and instead step into the Promised Land of peace, love, and joy. Ask God to show you if there is any pride hidden in your heart that may be causing you to grumble and complain. Ask Him to replace grumbling and complaining with the Fruit of the Spirit.

Pray: Father God, thank You for Your Word—Your love letter—that teaches us how to live with peace, love, and joy in abundance. Even in trials, hardships, and brokenness, You are with us. Jesus told us we would face troubles, but He also showed us how to live with humility, obedience, trust, and gratitude in every circumstance. Help us to choose worship over worry and praise over complaining, even in the storms. Thank You for Your grace and Your unfailing love. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
