Identity

What you will need: A Bible or your Bible app, a notebook, pen, and highlighter. The verses highlighted below are linked so that you can easily access them during your study time.

Jump Start

1. Have you ever dressed up for a costume party or “trick or treated” as a child? What was your favorite costume? Why? Why do you think we enjoy pretending to be something we are not?

2. Answer the question: "I am _____________." If you strip away your career or duties, now who are you? Where has a failure shaken your sense of identity? What excuses do you use? Answer the question: "I'm not ________________ enough." What if our mindset was to complete this statement: "I am a dearly loved child of God, disguised as _________." Does that change your answer? Does that change how you see your identity?

3. Read Exodus 3:7-11 and 14. What should Moses have heard from God in this passage? What adjectives would you use? Why is the "I AM" statement of God so important? How does this apply to your identity?

4. We all have insecurities, but that doesn’t mean our insecurities have us. Read Exodus 3:12 and 4:11-12. How do these statements from the Great "I AM" give you confidence?

5. Read 1 Peter 2:9-10. Who does God say you are now? List anything that you see and underline the most impactful description as you apply them to your life.

6. Final Thought: We all have regrets and shame, a "bookmarked page" in our lives that we keep returning to, thinking it defines who we are. Read 2 Corinthians 5:17 out loud together. Read it again silently, claiming it for yourself individually. Don’t share details, but do share if you have a dog-eared page that you are willing to tear out of your life book and leave behind.

Deeper
Our confidence in God comes from knowing Him, His character, and His attributes. Faith is not how strongly we can believe, but is based on how confident we are in the God we are believing in. Review these verses and take notes for yourself on statements that God has made about Himself.
