The Great Campaign - Week 4

Discussion Guide

We have come to the end of “The Great Campaign” series and what a ride it has been.  Our prayer is that you allow God’s word to shape both your faith and your perspective on politics, as well as every other aspect of your life. In this final week, let’s turn to God’s Word to discover where our true citizenship lies.

What you will need: A Bible or your Bible app, a notebook, pen, and highlighter. The verses highlighted below are linked so that you can easily access them during your study time.

Jump Start

1. Do you like to go on vacation, or would you rather be at home? What is the one thing you miss the most when you are away from home?

2. Read Philippians 3:20-21, John 17:15-17. How can we live like a citizen of heaven while here on earth? What was the significance of the two things Jesus prayed for us?

Notes: We can so easily get caught up in the things of this world. Thinking all is terrible or the other extreme, joining the ways of this world. We are called to be in the world but not of the world. The scriptures say we are a citizen of heaven, so we need to be intentional about not blending in.

3. Read Matthew 5:14-16. What are some ways we tend to represent and blend in with the world? What are some ways we can represent God at home, work, gym? According to this verse what is the result of others seeing your good works?

Notes: This weekend we heard that we were not called to isolate, we were called to influence. At some point in our lives being a citizen of the United States will come into conflict with our citizenship being of heaven. Our goal should be to represent Christ and His Word. This will bring glory to our Father in Heaven.

4. Read Revelation 21:1-4. Share an experience when times were so bad you thought it was over. Have you had a time you experienced extreme happiness? Discuss how this verse should bring us great joy.

Notes: As we see in this last verse in Revelation, our broken world will one day be made new. No government, politician, policy, or anything else can restore this broken world. Our answer and hope are found in Jesus Christ alone.

Action Step: Will you ask God to help you live as a citizen of heaven and not this world. Ask Him how you can represent Him better in your daily life. Continue to pray for our country and the president that was elected.
