The Great Campaign - Week 3

Discussion Guide

Should Christians vote? Which candidate is morally better? Should I vote based on character? Should I vote based on laws and morals? So much to think about. Here is the main question, is my faith shaping my vote? It is not our vote that should shape our faith. As you start discussion let’s be the church of Christ and show our friends the respect and love of Christ.

What you will need: A Bible or your Bible app, a notebook, pen, and highlighter. The verses highlighted below are linked so that you can easily access them during your study time.

Jump Start

1. Discuss the first time you tried Life Group with people different from you, all walks of life and how it worked. How has joining life group encouraged you and helped you grow in your walk with Christ? How can life group members apply Romans 12:10

2. Read Matthew 22:15-17. What were the Pharisees trying to do with Jesus? Discuss how they used politics to try and trap Him. How are politics still a source of divisiveness?

Notes: The Pharisees thought they could trip Jesus up with bringing into question politics of that time concerning paying taxes to Caesar. This is the “hot topic” today that can get us tripped up and hurt our witness for Him.

3. Read Matthew 22:18-22. Discuss the wisdom Jesus used to answer the question? How can we use the same wisdom when a “hot topic” comes up? Consider how they “marveled” at His reply and their actions afterwards.

Notes: The Pharisees were threatened by Jesus and were trying to find a way to take Him down. In His wisdom Jesus kept His focus on Gods Kingdom. Jesus did not take sides and kept in mind the mission that He had been sent for. His wise answer made them marvel and respect Him and they moved on. Might we mimic Jesus with our words and actions.

4. Read 1 Corinthians 10:31, Matthew 5:16, John 3:30. During these last few days of voting season how can you honor God better? What should our “real” goal be as we practice our rights as American Citizens?

Notes: As shared this weekend in the message we know that we are privileged with the right to vote. However, as Christ Followers we are expected to honor God in all we do. Our main agenda should be to honor God with our lives and bring others to Christ. Ask God if there is any area around politics that you need to change to honor Him better.

Action Step: We were given the challenge to pray for both candidates running for president. Let’s continue to do so. Ask God to help you to walk in grace and love. Being more concerned about God’s Kingdom than anything around us.
