Sermon on the Mount - Week 2

Leader Guide

When you think of being a representative, what comes to mind? As we continue through Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, we see Him share truths that flipped the script on everything the crowd thought they knew. This week, we’re talking about what it means to be a good representative for Christ—to let our light shine. When we live this way, it becomes clear that the law of Christ is itself a blessing. It shows others that we belong to Him and reveals how we’re called to reflect His light in a dark world.

What you will need: A Bible or your Bible app, a notebook, pen, and highlighter. The verses highlighted below are linked so that you can easily access them during your study time.

Leader: This section is designed to get discussions started, examine God’s truth, and apply it to our week. Life Group leaders should not assume everyone in their group is a Christ follower. Because they are taking part in a Life Group, they must have some openness to know more and explore. Pray for the Holy Spirit to work and let Him lead you as well.

1. What’s one object or item that best represents your personality? Now think back—have you ever had to officially represent your school, job, or church? What was that like?

2. Read Matthew 5:14-16. What does Jesus say about our purpose in the world? Why are we described as a “light?” Discuss some ways we can “shine our light” for others to see on a typical day—at work, home, or online?

Leader: Jesus reminds us that our light isn’t meant to be hidden. When we live in a way that honors Him, it draws attention—not to ourselves, but to our Father in heaven. It’s a way of pointing to Him.

3. Read Matthew 5:17-18, Psalm 1:1-3. What do these verses say about the purpose and permeance of God’s law? In what way does this verse still relate to our good work?

Leader: Jesus didn't come to cancel the Old Testament but to fulfill it. The law reveals how holy God is and how deeply we need a Savior. Obedience isn’t about perfection—it’s about a relationship. And when we walk with Him, we bear fruit.

4. Read Matthew 5:21-24, 27, 37, 42, 43-44, 48. Discuss some of the ways that Jesus raised the bar on the original laws? How is His version of righteousness different from just “following the rules?”

Leader: Jesus moved the conversation from external obedience to heart transformation. It’s not just about murder—it's about anger. Not just adultery—but lust. Not just loving your neighbor—but loving your enemy. It’s a call to radical, grace-filled living that only makes sense when you walk closely with Christ.

5. Action Steps: Let’s take it from knowledge to practice. Ask God to help you live in boldness and humility as the world desperately needs to see Jesus.

*In what situations or relationships, are you currently hiding your light? What is one way you can be bolder and more intentional this week?

*Is there any area where God is calling you to raise the bar—not in perfection but in surrender?

*Who in your life might see Jesus more clearly because of you this week?
